About this website

Our Story

We rented the Art Gallery House in Milan, Italy for eight days this summer through VRBO. We paid right away to secure the reservation. Everything was fine, until it was not.

This website is a result of frustration in trying to deal with VRBO and the property host Eva. In case you are not aware, VRBO will do everything to protect the host, especially a premium host, over the guests.  We are guests who are expressing our dissatisfaction with the property, host, and follow-up. This is our review based on our specific experience.

I have had over 20 telephone calls, 50 emails, ongoing text messages and customer service chats over the past week trying to resolve the issues, only to get the run-around, be lied to, obstructed, and ignored. The final straw is that I have asked repeatedly (at least 15 times) for the link to review the property, only to be told: (1) I will get it within 3 to 5 days, (2) I will get it within 5 to 7 days, (3) the request has been escalated, (4) someone is working on it, (5) the host has to rate us first, (6) repeatedly sent links to review customer service webpage and (7) I allegedly already got it so check my spam folder.

The Property is not as described

We had so many things that we overlooked because we really wanted to enjoy our vacation. We did not complain about having to deal with the electricity constantly going out or the filth in the sinks and just dealt with it. However, Eva the host decided to charge us for pre-existing damage in the unit and that was a step too far.

In looking at the photographs on the VRBO site now, I see how cleaver they are. They are taken from specific angles to mask the problems. But this does not help the traveler as we were stuck in a non-functional space for eight days in a foreign country.

As they say in Texas "All Hat. No Cattle." That is the best way to describe this property. Looks good in photos, but is not comfortable or functional for easy daily living.

CAUTION: not as represented

We were guests at this property for eight days. We were never comfortable. It is staged for show, not use. VRBO obstructed us from leaving a review, the host charged our credit card without permission, and we spent hours repairing the property so we could stay there.  Save yourself grief. Do not stay here.

A few of the problems during our stay:

  1. Air-conditioning did not work for three days. Host said she would send someone, but not until the day before we left and the person never showed up. 97 degrees F with 70 percent humidity and no air-conditioning. A neighbor came over, changed some settings, again reset the electric and got it going. But this was after three days.
  2. Sinks were filthy when we arrived. Never cleaned and were water stained and had hair in them. Toilet had stains on the bottom. We had to wipe down all surfaces when we arrived.
  3. Electricity goes out constantly. Needs a heavy up. Lost all groceries in refrigerator plus washer stopped and clothes sat in water until we returned at night. We had to fix the electrical box at least twice a day the whole time we were there, which was not our job or expertise, but otherwise we would sit in the dark.
  4. Dangerous location. A lunatic screamed all night right under the balcony, swearing and threatening to kill us all. This went on for about three hours. There is a constant flow of police sirens and other sirens all night long right under the windows, so do not expect to sleep.
  5. The front unit door did not lock. We were charged for pre-existing damage by the host Eva, who charged our credit card without authorization. Imagine how unsettling it is to have a lunatic screaming and knowing that the front door does not lock!  And we reported this repeatedly with no response.
  6. Unauthorized use of credit card. Eva will take your credit card number and use it at her will by charging a Milan tax of $10 USD per person per day during your stay. This could have been included in the base rate, but this is her way of getting your credit card number. Seems harmless at first, but now shown to be nefarious. Be aware and careful of her. She unilaterally decided to charge our card despite VRBO stating that they were trying to negotiate with her and asking for proof of damage. BTW: VRBO has been useless in trying to control Eva.
  7. Not a first floor unit.  To enter the building, you must walk up a full flight of stairs. This takes you to the lobby, where the choice is a small, 2-person elevator or another two flights up to the unit. It is not for the faint of heart or anyone with any physical limitation. The floor half below grade is Minus 1, then the lobby is Floor Zero/Zed, then the first floor is up the two flights of stairs, so it is not a true first floor unit as most would describe it. No big deal unless you are tired, physically limited in any way, or carry bags/luggage.
  8. Not as convenient as portrayed. There are no restaurants nearby. You have to walk five blocks to find restaurants near the Duomo. The subway is about a mile away. The tram at the end of the street goes to Duomo, but no other tourist area. No evening or weekend pedestrian traffic or activity, so the street is abandoned at night and creepy.  We had to cross the street coming home as there were thugs on the corner and we did not feel safe (and all three of us live urbanized areas in major US cities). Better to stay north or west of Duomo for access to action.

Dysfunction at the Art Gallery House Milan, italy

Low Profile Mini Furniture

Low Profile Mini Furniture

Low Profile Mini Furniture

At Art Gallery House Milan, there is no comfort. The living room furniture is so small scaled that three adults 5'6" to 5'10" could not sit on it.  Way too low and short length that it hit on the back of our leg mid-thigh. Very uncomfortable.

One queen bed ONLY

This apartment does NOT sleep four. No way! This is the only bed and it is so low to the ground that it is inaccessible. About 10 inches from floor.  And it is queen sized.

Futon to sleep on floor

Futon to sleep on floor

The futon is represented as the second bed. Technically, it is.  But it is a double/full size foam that basically sits on the ground. So if you want to sleep on foam on the floor, have at it. Otherwise, this is all there is for the other 2 to 3 guests.

Horse Trough Bath

Second bathroom-Narrow Shower

Second bathroom-Narrow Shower

This is the master bath. There is no shower. You have to hold that handheld wand to bathe. FYI- this is a deep soaking tub, so be prepared to step over a 28 inch height to enter the tub. To exit, it is treacherous as there is a six inch drop back onto the floor. Scary and dangerous every day.

Second bathroom-Narrow Shower

Second bathroom-Narrow Shower

The only shower is off of the living room, so be prepared to walk through the common areas to bathe. Shower is 8 inch step up. But of more concern is that it is 2 feet wide! We could not lift our arms until we figured out to stand sideways/diagonally. 2' x 2.5' approximate  dimensions. Very narrow and dark.

No Natural Light

No Natural Light

All windows are covered by heavy plastic screens. There is no natural light through these panels. We figured out how to open one in the dining room/kitchen, but then got rope burns closing it again. We tried to keep them closed as it was almost 100 degrees in Milan during our stay and the air-conditioning did not work in the unit, but it

We tried to keep them closed as it was almost 100 degrees in Milan during our stay and the air-conditioning did not work in the unit, but it is disturbing no to have any natural light or see what is going on outside.

This was such a disturbing, dangerous experience, that I am willing to share our story with you.  I am not the owner, but a duped VRBO guest who experienced the problems at this property. I have traveled the world and am accustomed to different lodgings, but the short-comings at Art Gallery House are unacceptable.
